Perming hair to straighten it?

After years of thick, wavy, dry hair, Im trying to do something about it. Ive tried conditioning to no end to keep it soft and workable, Ive tried straightening irons (hair is too short to work on), hot combs, straightening gels and reg gels, nothing works. Nothing keeps my hair from becoming curly once my hair drys.

My last hope - reverse perming. Im going to try one of those home-perming kits and instead of curling, comb it straight and see if that works. The only problem is my hair is short (1-1.5 inches long) so I cant "pull" it straight with a comb like everyone says to do, so do you think just continuously passing a comb through my hair while the perm is in will keep it straight? I really dont want to look like a freak of nature because the perm messed my hair up even more =/ Any tips, anyone ever done this with short/thick/wavy hair like mine?

Thanks all

Perming hair to straighten it?

I would suggest you go to a hair salon and ask them for help. not saying you need to get it doen over there but ask for advice. They know all the ins and outs about hair and if you happen to catch a nice hair dresser she will glady talk to you about it...maybe you could sneak in asking the question by getting a small trim. hari dressers are always ready to start talking about things from family to politics to hair care. they are awesome!

I tried using a relaxer and my hair was somewhat short. I had it done professionally. It didn't come out as poker straight as I hoped and when my curly roots started growing in (which was about 2 weeks) it looked really funky.

Their are certain things I wouldn't do myself, one is attempt to do the brain surgery on myself. The other is putting toxic and flammable chemicals on my head. Chances are you are going to look like a freak and maybe burn your scalp. Hairdressers go to school to learn about chemicals and how they react to specific types of hair. I would not attempt to do this myself go see a professional.

Passing the comb through your hair while it is being relaxed will not straighten your hair! There is a process that the relaxer goes thru while on your head and no matter how long you comb it, if the relaxer doesn't get thru that process it will still be kinky and what not. I suggest that you allow a licensed cosmetologist to relax your hair! If memory serves me right (from attending cosmetology school), you may not get any results relaxing hair that short! You may wanna let it grow out another 2 or 3 inches! Keep in mind if you relax your hair now and it does not take, which I believe it won't, then you will have to wait at least 3 weeks to re relax it

But the choice is yours... :-)

go to a beauty salon they will have the stuff and they can do it without ruining your hair, i would have a proffessional do it.

who ever told you whatever was an idiot. there is no such thing as reverse perming. don't touch a perm get a relaxer, there is a difference. combing the relaxer isn't actually needed the relaxer will work by itself to straighten you hair and combing it can actually harm your hair. you could just take the easy way out and go to the salon.

Alternate- most people with your hair length get a texturizer. A texurizer softens the wave pattern of curly hair and work best at your length. With the texturixer you also wont have to worry about getting weird looks cause your hair is stick straight like Alf Alfa and you cant do anything with it. The texturizer will leave you with a beautiful soft curl that can be enhanced or straightened(not with a relaxer).
