Combing long hair when wet?

Is it ok to? I have long thin/fine hair. Which is more damaging: combing when wet or waiting until dry to comb?

Technically, you should leave you hair alone until it is dry if at all possible. Hair is more vulnerable to damage when it is wet. It sounds like you and I have the very same type hair. If I try to let my hair air dry, it dries tangled and then I have more problems because I have to straighten it which is even worse as far as damage goes. What I do is I use a detangling leave in conditioner and VERY gently pick through the hair with a wide toothed comb, letting the comb glide out when you hit a tangle. I put my hair up in a soft scrunchy until it is almost dry after I comb it. That keeps the pollution off of it while it dries and keeps it from retangling until it is more resistant to damage by drying.

Also be sure to keep up with your hair trims...don't let the ends get too bad or you'll be able to tell when you're trying to get after shower tangles out. You might also look into getting an occasional deep conditioning treatment.

Hope I helped.

I always comb my hair when it's wet with a pick because it seems for me to be the least painful. I'd suggest washing your hair with shampoo, then putting some conditioner in it, wash it out, and then applying a straightening gel or a defrizzing spray or a detangling spray to help you comb it easier,

i always comb my hair before applying gel or scrunch spray and have never had a problem. just a wide toothed comb though and not a brush. ; )

I always comb the hair before I get in the shower, and after i get out and blot it with a towel.

Just don't rub it dry, or brush when dry - it will cause splitting and breaking.

Both my daughter and I have long hair. We use a "shower comb" which is a very wide tooth plastic comb, when our hair is wet. We also use Aveda's detangler which works great and smells good too. Also, use plenty of conditioner. I have thin straight hair, so I use a voluminizing shampoo and conditioner, which works great, but for some reason it does make my hair harder to comb afterwards without the detangler. Good luck!

both are damaging to an extent but brush with a wide tooth comb when wet. Always start at the ends and work your way up and then after it is dry brush again- first with the comb to get through any tangles with the smallest amount of damage then brush with a brush to smooth it out

wait until it's dry. Hair ,(especially fine hair like mine and yours) when combed wet doesn't break the hair that you can see, but it stretches the hair and the hair becomes weaker, and this makes it easier to snap and break. Eventually this could end with very short hair like my friend. she had the same hair as me and use to comb it when wet, it just started breaking and she had to cut it short. I really hope this helps and I would not comb my hair when wet.

my parents are hair stylist and they said to start at the bottom and go up and if there are tangles DONT BRUSH OVER THEM HARD start at the bottom of them and go up
